HERITAGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

WAUNAKEE, WI
Waunakee Community School District
CLIENT: Eppstein Uhen Architects
Given the school's design inspiration of "Roots & Shoots: origin, possibility, and growth," I created an immersive environment for each grade level, coordinating with the interior color palette. The environment themes were chosen as native areas present in the village of Waunakee: Garden (K), Prairie (1), Wetlands (2), Foraging (3), and Wisconsin State Symbols (4). Entrances to each grade are marked with a 5'-tall dimensional icon and over 100 feet of vibrant corridor graphics, providing clear navigation for young learners and visitors while also encouraging curiosity and exploration. Inside, each neighborhood has a feature artwork wall with "did you know" fact signage utilized as a teaching tool.
This new construction school replaced a 100+ year old facility so creating a history display was essential in paying homage not only to the building itself, but to the students and staff who learned and taught here. I designed a visual timeline with photos and historical events to tell Heritage's story, all positioned at a lower, inclusive level on the wall for young children to experience.
